SIBU: SMK Sacred Heart added another feather in their cap when it bagged a gold and two bronze medals in the recent Asia International Mathematical Olympiad (AIMO) Open Contest held in Kuala Lumpur.
The school sent three students to take part in the competition in order to nurture students’ interest in Mathematics and broaden their horizons.
They were Ngu Chii Ong, Ricky Pau Jiong Sin and Kelvin Ngu Zhu Hao, who were accompanied by teacher-in-charge Ngu Ming Ung.
Kelvin won a gold medal in the Grade 9 category, while Chii Ong and Ricky each bagged a bronze medal in the senior secondary category.
It was certainly no walk in the park as they competed against contestants from 10 other countries, namely Indonesia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, Macau, Brazil, Bulgaria and Myanmar.
This year, over 1,300 students took part in the competition held at Universiti Malaya’s examination building.
AIMO is an annual international Olympiad competition originated from Hong Kong, and has been organised by the Asia International Mathematical Olympiad Union since 2012.
It is a platform for students to improve critical thinking skills and exchange knowledge, and to promote educational and cultural development.
